Highlights: Man Utd 4-1 Istanbul Basaksehir

Manchester United are within one point of reaching the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League knockout rounds thanks to a 4-1 thrashing of Istanbul Basaksehir at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring inside seven minutes with a stunning half volley from 20 yards.

The Portuguese attacking midfielder was gifted his second when Istanbul goalkeeper Mert Gunok dropped the ball at his feet six yards out to double United’s lead only 20 minutes into the game.

Manchester United were beaten 1-2 away to the Turkish Super Lig champions only three weeks ago but there was to be no repeat of that performance on English soil.

A long pass from Victor Lindelof released Marcus Rashford down the right wing. The forward was then tripped inside the penalty area when seemingly running out of space to offer much threat.

Rashford picked himself up to duly convert into a 3-0 lead 10 minutes before the break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rang the changes in the second half, allowing the likes of Fernandes and Rashford a rest for the final half hour, ahead of Sunday’s trip to Southampton in the Premier League.

Istanbul Basaksehir showed some threat in the final 20 minutes and grabbed a consolation through Deniz Turuc’s direct free kick with quarter-of-an-hour to go. Arguably, David de Gea should have saved it.

Daniel James made it 4-1 in stoppage time on a counter attack, with fellow substitute Mason Greenwood providing the assist on a plate for the Wales international.
