Highlights: Everton 5-2 West Brom

By on 19th September 2020

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a hat-trick as Everton start the 2020-21 Premier League season with back-to-back victories.

West Bromwich Albion started their return to the Premier League with a 0-3 defeat at home by Leicester City last weekend but got off to a much better start at Goodison Park on Saturday when Grady Diangana fired Slaven Bilic’s side into a 10th minute lead from 25 yards as Yerry Mina backed off.

The visitors came close to doubling their lead midway through the first half but for Jake Livermore’s effort hitting the outside of the post, with Jordan Pickford beaten.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised on half hour. Although the goal was originally ruled out for offside, VAR showed that a West Brom defender played the ball to the Everton striker and therefore he was onside.

Summer signing from Real Madrid, James Rodriguez turned the game on its head in the closing moments of the first half. First, he scored a superb 20 yard strike into the bottom corner as he was given time and space to steady himself. Less than 60 seconds later Kieran Gibbs shoved the Colombian and was shown his marching orders.

After the whistle was blown for half-time, West Bromwich Albion manager Slaven Bilic ran onto the pitch to confront referee Mike Dean and was shown the red card himself. Not the first time the Croatian has been sent off at Goodison Park.

Two minutes into the second half and the West Midlands club were back on level terms courtesy of a superb 25-yard free kick from Matheus Pereira into the top corner.

Everton restored their lead a few minutes later when Sam Johnstone could only parry a header from close range, with Michael Keane on hand to slide home from close range.

Calvert-Lewin made it 4-2 shortly after the hour, when he touched home Richarlison’s goalbound effort from virtually on the goalline.

The striker scored his first professional hat-trick four minutes later when he was left unmarked from a corner to head home from inside the six-yard box.
