England defender Lucy Bronze joins Barcelona

It was a piece of big, surprising news for the culers when Barcelona announced they have signed England international right-back Lucy Bronze from Manchester City on a free transfer. Bronze has signed a four-year contract with the Catalans.

Bronze is a three-time Champions League winner and a three-time Women’s Super League champion, and became the first defender and English women’s player to win the FIFA The Best award in 2020 after winning a Treble with Lyon.

The 2020 Best FIFA Women’s Player rejoined City for a second spell in September 2020 after three years with Lyon. In May, Manchester City announced the 30-year-old would leave the club when her deal expired on 30 June.

Bronze made 111 appearances for City during her two years in Manchester, scoring 14 goals, but left the club at the end of her contract. She won five major trophies with City, with two of those arriving in her second spell with the club.

Can’t say NO

The England international said the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in world football was ultimately just too hard to resist.

“I’m just really excited to play for a club like Barcelona, one of the biggest clubs in the world,” said Bronze. “I can’t wait to get into training with the girls.

“At the end of the season, I was already leaving my old club anyway. And after a couple of conversations, as soon as I had an offer, I knew that Barca were interested… Yeah, you can’t say no to Barcelona, so I had to come, and I’m just really excited.

“The team is already amazing, play amazing football and win a lot of trophies. They were unfortunate in the Champions League final, but I know the club’s aspirations are to win Champions League titles, and that’s the goal I have as well. As a player, I hope to add some energy in attack and defence.

“I’m just so happy to be here, can’t wait to play in front of the fans, and I’ll do everything I can for this club to make sure we can win trophies together.”

After signing Luzy Bronze, Barcelona Femeni announced on Sunday they have signed Brazilian attacker Geyse Ferreira from Madrid CFF on a free transfer.

Ferreira, who finished the season as the league’s joint-top scorer along with Asisat Oshoala, has signed a two-year deal with the champions.

After finishing as the top scorer in the Primera Iberdrola last season alongside Oshoala, the youngster was of interest to big clubs. She was close to moving to Arsenal, but in the end, Geyse chose Barcelona.
