Highlights: Rennes 1-2 Chelsea

By on 24th November 2020

Olivier Giroud scored in stoppage time away to Rennes to book Chelsea’s place into the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League.

The English Premier League side could have been ahead as early as the fourth minute but for Timo Werner missing from six yards out when the opportunity seemed easier to score than shoot over the bar.

Frank Lampard’s side did take the lead midway through the first half though. A long ball from Mason Mount picked out Callum Hudson-Odoi, who took the ball down excellent before rolling the ball beneath the advancing goalkeeper.

Alfred Gomis replaced Edouard Mendy as Rennes’ number one earlier this season and made a spectacular double save to deny Mason Mount from doubling Chelsea’s lead after half hour. Werner had a goal disallowed at the end of the first half for offside.

Chelsea controlled the game throughout but looked set to drop points when striker Serhou Guirassy was unmarked to head home a corner late on. It’s the first goal the Blues and goalkeeper Mendy have conceded in the competition this season.

Timo Werner had the chance to win it but was denied by Gomis one-on-one, only for the ball to loop up for Giroud to power home with his head from seven yards out and give Chelsea all three points.

Both the Premier League side and Sevilla have now advanced from the group with two games still to play.
