Tottenham Hotspur picked up their first points of the new season with an emphatic 5-2 victory away on Southampton on Sunday lunchtime.

Heung-min Son scored four goals at St Mary’s Stadium as the Saints suffer back-to-back defeats.

Hugo Lloris was the first goalkeeper called into action on Sunday as he produced stunning reflexes to deny a powerful Che Adams effort.

However, the French number 1 should have done better with the opening goal as he was beaten by Danny Ing’s first time effort from a wide angle. The goalkeeper got a hand to the England international’s effort but failed to prevent it finding the far corner.

Some excellent work from Tanguy Ndombele in the middle of the park won possession back for Spurs before playing the ball down the wing to Harry Kane. The striker then played the ball across goal for Son to get onto an equalise with a fine strike across goal in the second minute of first-half stoppage time. As a result, the BTTS Tips for this game were successful before the break.

The same combination linked up again within two minutes of the restart as Kane’s through ball played Son in one-on-one with Alex McCarthy. The forward converted into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

Tottenham were on their way to victory shortly after the hour when Harry Kane played Son in one-on-one again, this time with a chip over the top. The South Korean international showed no nerves in front of goal as he converted his hat-trick goal.

All four of Son Heung-min’s goals came when facing Alex McCarthy one-on-one and his last one came in the final 20 minutes to put the game beyond reach.

There was still time for Harry Kane to get on the scoresheet in the final 10 minutes, rebounding from close range after Erik Lamela’s powerful strike had been tipped onto the post.

Southampton scored the first and last goals in this game, with their consolation coming through a 90th minute penalty when VAR awarded a penalty for the ball bouncing up onto the arm of Matt Doherty’s arm. Ings converted.
