Borussia Dortmund started their 2020-21 German Bundesliga campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday evening.

Erling Haaland scored a brace in the second half after Giovanni Reyna had broken the deadlock 10 minutes before half-time.

The home side didn’t have it all their own way though as Roman Burki had to pull off a double save from close range to keep the score at 0-0.

Reyna opened the scoring with a low finish across Yann Sommer’s goal after summer signing Jude Bellingham played a well-weighted pass from inside the penalty area. One 17-year-old to another.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half and Reyna was involved again. This time the teenage attacking midfielder was tripped inside the penalty area by Ramy Bensebaini. Although the referee initially waved it away, VAR intervened and a penalty area awarded.

Although Jadon Sancho wanted to take the honours, Erling Haaland grabbed the ball for his first-ever spot kick in the Bundesliga and drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

The Norwegian striker sealed the three points on a counter-attack in the final 15 minutes. Sancho brought the ball into Gladbach’s half, and although his through ball wasn’t the greatest angle, Haaland managed to beat Sommer with a first-time strike.
