Crystal Palace recorded their second successive win at Old Trafford in the Premier League with a 3-1 win at Manchester United on Saturday evening.

Roy Hodgson’s side didn’t score too many goals in the opening half hour last season but made it back-to-back games with early goals to start the 2020-21 Premier League campaign when Andros Townsend scored inside seven minutes.

The winger was at the back post to produce a fine finish from Jeffrey Schlupp’s low cross.

Jordan Ayew produced a great save from David de Gea as Manchester United offered next to no threat at the other end in the first half.

The Red Devils came out more lively in the second half and should have been on level terms through Mason Greenwood, but the teenager’s free header from close range went wide.

In the final 20 minutes Jordan Ayew’s scuffed effort hit Victor Lindelof’s arm from close range. Although referee Martin Atkinson let play go on, VAR intervened. Somewhat bizarrely, a penalty was awarded.

Jordan Ayew saw his effort saved by de Gea, but VAR spotted Luke Shaw running into the box before the kick had been taken. Wilfried Zaha then stepped up for the retake and powered the ball into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Manchester United’s only signing so far this summer, Donny van de Beek had been brought on for his debut midway through the second half and was hand to finish well from seven yards when the ball broke kindly to him, 10 minutes from time.

However, it would not spur a fightback from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as Zaha picked up the ball outside the area from a Victor Lindelof giveaway and beat David de Gea at his near post five minutes from time.

Crystal Palace have started the new season with six points out of six and host Everton next Saturday. Manchester United will be looking for their first points of the season when they go to Brighton & Hove Albion at lunchtime on the same day.
