Highlights: Bayern Munich 8-0 Schalke 04

By on 19th September 2020

Bayern Munich kicked off the 2020-21 German Bundesliga season with fireworks as they hammered Schalke 04 8-0 at an empty Allianz Arena on Friday night.

Serge Gnabry gave last season’s treble winners the lead inside four minutes with a fine 18-yard strike on his left foot after an excellent first touch.

It was 2-0 after 19 minutes with a coolly slotted finish from Leon Goretzka from the same position as Bayern’s opener, after being teed up by Thomas Muller.

Robert Lewandowski was the Bundesliga top scorer last season but only netted one of the Bavarians’ eight goals on Friday night. That came from the penalty spot on half hour after Ozan Kabak went through the back of the Polish striker.

Serge Gnabry made it 4-0 within 80 seconds of the restart on a counter-attack with some calamitous defending from the visitors. The German star ended up firing into an empty net.

An excellent chip over the top from Joshua Kimmich released summer signing Leroy Sane. Unselfish play from the pacey winger saw him setup Gnabry to tap in his hat-trick through the legs of Ralf Fahrmann on the hour.

Thomas Muller scored the next with a fine left-footed volley after a rabona cross from Lewandowski. Though the goalkeeper should have been able to have kept the strike out at this level.

Sane got among the goals against his former club in the final 20 minutes as Kimmich’s through ball played the attacker in as the Schalke defence were all over the place. The 24-year-old coolly finished past Fahrmann one-on-one.

The final goal came 10 minutes from time when 17-year-old Jamal Musiala was given space to cut inside and was then able to beat the Schalke goalkeeper at his near post.

In the process, Musiala has become Bayern Munich’s youngest-ever goalscorer, breaking the record previously held by Roque Santa Cruz. The experts over at Football Betting Tips correctly predicted Bayern Munich to win this game by 5 or more goals before kickoff.

Bayern Munich saw 63% of the possession, creating 21 chances, whilst Manuel Neuer had just one save to make all game.
