Highlights: Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton

By on 12th September 2020

Wilfried Zaha scored the only goal of the game as Crystal Palace started the 2020-21 Premier League season with a 1-0 win at home to Southampton on Saturday.

The Saints had headed into the game as many people’s favourites following their end to the last campaign and with Palace taking one point from their final eight games.

Roy Hodgson answered any critics with his side putting in a solid defensive performance that didn’t allow the visitors too many chances, with England international Danny Ings up front.

Zaha’s goal itself came after only 13 minutes with a controlled volley following a deep cross from Andros Townsend. The Eagles didn’t score many early goals at all last season so this may have come as a surprise to many supporters.

Early in the second half Kyle Walker-Peters was shown a red card for a foul in the centre circle on Tyrick Mitchell only for VAR to overturn the decision. This is the first time in Premier League history a red card has been overturned in play.

Vicente Guaita did pull off a fine save from Che Adams’ volley from six yards out following a knock down from Jannik Vestergaard as the visitors pressed late on.

Wilfried Zaha may have felt he killed the game off with his second in the final 15 minutes only for his goal to be correctly disallowed by a late flag for offside from the referee’s assistant.
