Zinedine Zidane guided Real Madrid to a 3-1 win at Celta Vigo to start the 2019-20 La Liga season for the Spanish giants.

Rivals Barcelona tripped up at Athletic Bilbao on Friday night but the Madrid side weren’t going to fall victims at the Balaídos on Saturday afternoon.

However, they did not make it easy on themselves. Whilst they took a 12th minute lead through Karim Benzema, they were nearly pegged back on the stroke of half-time but for VAR overturning Brais Mendez’ effort.

Real Madrid were then reduced to 10 men at 1-0 just 10 minutes into the second half when Luka Modric was shown his marching orders for a late foul on Denis Suarez.

Toni Kroos gave the visitors a 2-0 cushion five minutes later with a stunning 30-yard strike that when in off the underside of the crossbar.

Real Madrid made it three when Lucas Vazquez finished off a flowing move late on. Celta did score a stoppage time consolation through Iker Losada.

Gareth Bale had been recalled to the starting lineup having been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu all summer. The Wales international played as part of a front three with big summer signing Eden Hazard currently out injured.
