Crystal Palace failed to take advantage of the extra man as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by 10-man Everton in the opening game of their 2019-20 Premier League season.

Jordan Pickford was forced to make two excellent saves in the second half to help preserve a point for Marco Silva’s side.

The England number one denied Jordan Ayew and Max Meyer was Palace took the game to the visitors in the final 15 minutes following Morgan Schneiderlin’s dismissal.

Everton had been the better team in the first half but disappointed in the final third. Gylfi Sigurdsson had dragged an effort wide and Seamus Coleman fired an opportunity straight at Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Much of the pre-game attention was focused on Wilfried Zaha, who was only named among the substitutes by Roy Hodgson. The Ivory Coast international had been strongly linked with a move to both Everton and Arsenal over the summer but was denied a move by his club prior to Thursday’s transfer deadline.
