Highlights: Rayo Vallecano 1-0 Real Madrid

La Liga’s bottom club Rayo Vallecano won the final Madrid derby of the season by stunning Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid 1-0 at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas on Sunday evening.

Adrian Embarba scored the only goal of the game following a VAR-awarded penalty after Jesus Vallejo tugged down Javi Guerra inside the area. Centre-back Vallejo was making only his second La Liga start of the season for the Spanish giants, whilst Guerra was in because Raul de Tomas was ineligible to face his parent club. It was the first time Real Madrid have lost to a side bottom of La Liga since 2004.

Karim Benzema was rested for this game as the visitors offered very little threat on Rayo’s goal. In six games that Real Madrid played in October, the French striker was the only player in Zidane’s side to find the back of the net.

Rayo Vallecano had lost all five of their previous Madrid derbies by a single goal this season, their first back in the top flight since winning last season’s second division.

The result leaves the Madrid minnows six points adrift from safety with only three games remaining. However, their final fixtures are against sides directly above them – Levante (away), Real Valladolid (home) and Celta Vigo (away). Real Madrid have third place wrapped up following the weekend’s results.
