Highlights: Barcelona 1-0 Levante

By on 27th April 2019

Lionel Messi came off the bench to score the game’s only goal as Barcelona beat Levante to secure their 26th La Liga title.

The Argentine superstar had been rested with Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Liverpool in mind before being introduced at half-time following a goalless opening 45 minutes.

Messi latched onto Arturo Vidal’s header before beating two defenders and stroking the ball past Aitor Fernandez in the Levante goal just after the hour.

The visitors twice went close to snatching an equaliser and putting Barcelona’s title celebrations on hold, but Ernesto Valverde’s side were able to see the job through at the Camp Nou in the end.

Barcelona have now won the Spanish league in four of the past five seasons and will be looking to do the treble for the third time in the club’s history as they face Valencia in the Copa del Rey final next month and are in the final four of this season’s Champions League.

Opponents Liverpool played 24 hours earlier, thrashing Huddersfield Town 5-0 in the English Premier League, but with manager Jurgen Klopp fielding many players who will be expected to start at the Camp Nou midweek.
