Highlights: Alaves 0-2 Barcelona
Barcelona moved to within touching distance of the 2018-19 Spanish La Liga title following a comfortable victory at Alaves on Tuesday night.
Young midfielder Carles Alena opened the scoring with a close-range finish following a sweeping attack by the visitors in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
Barcelona were awarded a penalty shortly after following a VAR review of a handball, which Luis Suarez duly converted.
Three points mean Barcelona will be confirmed as champions on Wednesday if Atletico Madrid lose to Valencia. The reigning champions are 12 points clear of Atletico, who have five games remaining. Barcelona are next in action at home to Levante on Saturday.
Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde may consider resting players against Levante this weekend as it comes ahead of next week’s Champions League semi-final first leg against English Premier League opposition Liverpool.
Valverde may have already had one eye on Wednesday’s first leg by opting to start Lionel Messi on the bench at Alaves. The Argentina forward came on just after an hour.
