Ajax moved three points ahead of PSV Eindhoven at the top of the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday with a narrow 1-0 win away to Groningen.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar held off the attention of defender Tim Handwerker before turning and firing the ball home into the corner, 12 minutes from time. VAR had a look at the good and it stood.

Five minutes later the striker was shown a second yellow card for an elbow to the jaw of Samir Memisevic. On another day he could easily have been shown a straight red.

Ajax held on for an important three points in the title race just four days after their famous win at Juventus that saw them reach the semi-finals of this season’s Champions League for the first time in more than two decades.

Erik ten Hag’s side now have three games remaining to capture their 34th Eredivisie championship. That starts at home to Vitesse on Tuesday.
