Highlights: Man City 4-3 Tottenham

By on 17th April 2019

Tottenham Hotspur have progressed to the semi-finals of this season’s Champions League where they will face Ajax following a dramatic away goals victory against Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side headed to the Etihad Stadium with a 1-0 lead from the first leg on Wednesday night but fell behind after only four minutes when Raheem Sterling cut inside and fired across goal into the bottom corner.

Manchester City had started off the better but quickly found themselves pegged back when Aymeric Laporte’s strange attempt at a clearance allowed Son Heung-min to fire home from 18 yards through the legs of Ederson. The South Korean scored his third goal of the tie just moments later with a curling effort on the counter-attack to give Tottenham a 2-1 lead after only 10 minutes, and 3-1 on aggregate with the away goals in their favour.

The hosts fired back within 60 seconds as Bernardo Silva’s effort deflected in off Danny Rose before Raheem Sterling was found unmarked at the back post to tuck City 3-2 ahead after only 21 minutes.

It wouldn’t be until the hour mark that Manchester City lead the tie for the first time, when Sergio Aguero managed to beat Hugo Lloris at his near post.

Their lead would last just 15 minutes as Fernando Llorente scored from close range from a corner. The decision was reviewed by VAR and allowed to stand as replays showed the ball clearly hitting his thigh and not his arm on the way in.

More drama came in the third minute of stoppage time when Raheem Sterling thought he’d scored his hat-trick and the winner with a left-footed effort. The players, manager and fans danced in celebration for a while until VAR intervened. Replays show Aguero was clearly offside from Bernardo Silva’s deflection in the build up and the goal was disallowed. Tottenham progress after a thrilling game!
