Highlights: Leganes 1-1 Real Madrid

Leganes have opened up a 10-point gap between them and the relegation zone following a 1-1 draw at home to Real Madrid on Monday night.

It was the first first ever point they have taken against neighbours Real Madrid in a draw they thoroughly deserved.

The home side led through Jonathan Silva’s calm 18-yard finish from Martin Braithwaite’s pass on the stroke of half-time in which Zinedine Zidane’s visitors had rarely threatened.

Madrid did come away from the Estadio Municipal de Butarque with a point though thanks to Karim Benzema’s equaliser six minutes into the second half. The French striker scored at the second attempt after Leganes goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar had palmed his initial shot. Benzema has now scored Real Madrid’s last five league goals.

This was Real Madrid’s first Monday night game in more than four years after the league recently announced it was going to have a match on Monday for the remainder of the season. This spot isn’t usually allocated to the top teams either.

Real Madrid have little to play for between now and the end of the season as they are out of the Champions League, title race and the Copa del Rey. A 10-point gap between them and Getafe in fifth means they are in no real danger of missing out on Champions League football next season either.
