Highlights: Lille 5-1 PSG

By on 14th April 2019

Paris Saint-Germain missed out on the chance to wrap up 2018-19 French Ligue 1 for the second successive weekend row as they were hammered 5-1 at second-placed Lille on Sunday.

A Thomas Meunier own goal had put Lille ahead after only seven minutes but Juan Bernat levelled for the visitors four minutes later. However, the Belgian was sent off for a professional foul on Nicolas Pepe after 36 minutes.

It was Pepe himself who finished one-on-one to give Lille the lead six minutes into the second half before Jonathan Bamba smashed in at the near post to put Lille in control 15 minutes later.

Headers from defenders Gabriel (71′) and Jose Fonte (84′) turned the scoreline into a surprise rout over the proverbial champions.

This was the first time PSG had conceded five goals in a league game since 2 December 2000, when they lost 5-1 at Sedan.

The Parisians saw two Kylian Mbappe goals ruled out for offside and lost captain Thiago Silva and Meunier to injury in the first half alone.

Paris Saint-Germain had been widely-expected to win the league last weekend, but drew 2-2 with Strasbourg in a game that will be remembered for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting missing an open goal.

Thomas Tuchel’s double-chasing side have a third shot to seal the title on Wednesday, needing a win at Nantes to seal a fifth Ligue 1 title over the past six seasons.
