10-man Ajax stunned Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven with a 3-1 win at the Amsterdam ArenA on Sunday.

The Champions League quarter-finalists claimed a significant win in the title race to close the gap to two points on their rivals at the top.

A Daniel Schwaab own goal midway through the first half had given the hosts the lead before Ajax were reduced to 10 men just before the hour when Noussair Mazraoui kicked PSV defender Angelino on the head. The Moroccan midfielder was initially shown a yellow card before VAR advised referee Bjorn Kuipers to change the colour to red.

From the resulting free-kick, Angelino provided the cross for the league’s top goalscorer, Luuk de Jong, to head in the equaliser.

Many were expecting PSV to go on and pick up the three points that would have given them an eight-point lead at the top of the division.

However, Dusan Tadic scored from the penalty spot in the final 20 minutes, though the decision was not initially awarded by the referee. And Brazilian winger David Neres struck a low finish in injury-time to give the Dutch giants a priceless victory and kept the title race alive.

Erik ten Hag’s side are back in action on Wednesday when they host Serie A champions Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League tie.
